There is no denying it. The pitch is ready, the ball is in the center field, the national flags are up and waved, faces painted, trumpets, drums, flares. It is World Cup 2010!
South Africa must be crowded this time of the year. Me and like millions of fans that are not there to witness the festivities in person will only wish we were there. But it is all good. With the help of the Internet and satellite television we get to see the “Jabulani” traversing the green pitch from end to end.
32 countries, if I am not mistaken, are divided into 8 groups with 4 teams in each group. The first match was host country South Africa against Mexico which ended with a nil-nil. And then there’s Argentina winning by a goal against Nigeria, South Korea outscoring Greece with 2 – nil.
And tonight (GMT +4), we get to see the United States takes on England. England scored early via Gerrard, but the US team was able to find an equalizer from Dempsey, well actually it was a “fumble” by the English goalie.
This is just the first 4 games of the Cup of life and it is starting to heat up as we see Germany tomorrow.
I hate to insert political musings into this post, but I am glad we still have international games. What with all the tensions in the embargos, phantom torpedoes, and border riots we can still all sit back and support our national teams, or some other nation’s team. Sitting still might not be the case when we see people burning cars (oops), but were we not glad Iran and US got to a friendly table(albeit green setting) and fight it out with spikes not missiles/diplomatic sanctions in the previous cups?
I am still looking for that speech by then UN General Kofi Annan regarding the essence of the cup and how he envied it. How people can easily forget about hate, and just compete in a friendly manner. And how nations cooperate and focus into a single goal.
The Cup.
By the way, I am for Spain and Italy.
